China has made a commitment to ramp up renewable energy resources. The progressive country decided to come up with a 250-acre solar farm in the shape of a panda.
The move is partially a PR campaign as China continues to lead the world in renewable energy. But it is said that this is also made to make children more aware and interested in renewable energy too.
UNDP wrote in a statement that their aim was to raise awareness about new energy among young Chinese people, and are hoping to encourage their interest through summer camps and open innovation design contests.
The first phase includes a one 50-megawatt plant. This was completed on June 30, according to PV magazine.
Called the Panda Power Plant, it is said to eliminate approximately million tons of coal that would have been used to produce electricity. This reduces carbon emissions by 2.74 million tons.
